It is that time of year again!

Clean Ocean Action is holding their beach clean ups on Saturday April 17, from 9- 12:30 like usual.

There are a few things that are done differently due to the pandemic. All persons attending MUST register before they come, and sign a waiver. (Minors must have a parent/guardian register for them, you cannot register for a group anymore as each person needs to sign a waiver!)

Besides that, please wear a mask and bring gloves and social distance per our state’s guidelines, choose an arrival time (9 am or 10am) and then carry on saving the environment like you always do!

Register here, read the FAQs here, and find a full list of locations here!

Hope to see you all on our beautiful expansive beaches for some social distance, save the environment awesomeness!

You can pre-register for a whichever site you prefer, or just show up!

As usual, it is rain or shine (hopefully closer to shine) and it is best to bring gloves and some friends with you!

Show up when you can, leave when you have to, but enjoy a day outside doing something constructive, positive for the environment and neighborhood, and satisfying!
A lot of people need community service hours, for clubs, societies, schools, sports, church, or just for a sense of pride in the accomplishments of oneself 🙂 . A beach clean up is a great way to help the community, and make a positive impact on your environment!

When you arrive at your chosen beach site, see whoever is in charge for bags and data cards, that capture what kinds and how much trash is found.
The data from these cards are tallied with the data from all of the other beach clean ups going on up and down the NJ coast.

See a report from last year, to put concrete numbers to just how much trash is on our beaches! Trust me…it will help you feel good about carrying your trash home with you, or walking the extra distance to put your trash in a can.

Screen Shot 2014-09-26 at 12.17.39 PMSmoker? In 2013 there were 32,303 filters found.

Screen Shot 2014-09-26 at 12.19.25 PMLove snacks? There were 30,944 candy wrappers/snack bags found.

Screen Shot 2014-09-26 at 12.19.42 PMBuy water bottles or cases of soda? There were 32,642 plastic caps/lids found, and 39,484 pieces of plastic found.

WOW.

I don’t know about you, but those numbers make me happy to do something as easy as recycle, and make sure my trash from picnics and outings make it to a trash can instead of the ground!

So come on out, and help keep our beaches happy and healthy!

Hopefully everyone got a chance to celebrate Earth Day, if even in a small way. Immediately following it came the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweeps!

The Poplar Ave site in Wildwood NJ went very well, with over 20 volunteers collecting almost 700 pieces of debris. The top 3 were glass pieces, plastic pieces, and straws. Believe it or not, the fourth most common object found was cigar tips! A few of the odd things found were a visor, a mouthguard, a surf wax comb, a patio chair, and a sieve.

The weather was gorgeous, and there were many local volunteers, including Girl Scout troop 43006, and kids from Cape May Technical High School.

The fall Clean Ocean Action beach sweep that took place on Poplar Ave in Wildwood Saturday, October 24 went wonderful! This fall’s turnout of local volunteers was even greater than in the spring. We had a large group of kids from a local high school, as well as kids from 2 other high schools.  There was a group of people from the Coast Guard base, and even families.

Together between 60 and 7o volunteers collected around 20 full bags of trash. This season the most frequent item found was again straws, with 326 collected total. Second on the list was 180 plastic bottles and 112 candy/food wrappers.

There are 94 different items listed on the COA trash item score cards, and only 8 items weren’t found on the beach. That means 86 different types of trash were found, just in a 3 block stretch of beach in Wildwood.  If this information doesn’t help people realize just how dirty our beaches are, I don’t know what will!

Trash doesn’t just mar beautiful scenery, and endanger the feet of those walking around, it endangers the animals and the ecosystem. Cigarette butts and plastic peices can be consumed by turtles, birds, and other marine life and can kill them. Animals can be tangled in plastic ties and 6 pack holders. Everyone has their own motivation, and my motivation to clean the beach is to help the marine life that I share the island with.

Here is a slideshow of pictures, if you place your cursor over the picture it will bring up the caption. Enjoy!
